2018 Farm Bill kick-off: Both the House Agriculture Committee and the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry are gearing up to start putting together the next Farm Bill due later this year. Over the past few weeks, both committees have held hearings to field testimony and ask questions on the upcoming issues. On March 22, the House committee hosted representatives from the dairy community to discuss the shortcomings of the Milk Margin Protection Program, inclusivity of dairy in nutritional standards, and the impact of trade on dairy.

Dairy Pride Act: A bipartisan legislative effort to crack down on the misuse of dairy terms by companies that make and market plant-based, non-dairy products has been introduced in both the House (HR 778) and Senate (S 130). Companies continue to market their products in direct contradiction with Food and Drug Administration regulations. However, the agency has done little to enforce these violations and now lawmakers are trying to remedy it with the Dairy Pride Act. DBMMC is striving to make this important legislation into law so dairy foods are not unfairly disadvantaged.

Farm Regulatory Certainty Act: Legislation (HR 848) has been introduced in the House to affirm and clarify Congress’ intention regarding manure under the Resources, Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). This bill comes after a federal judge in Washington applied solid waste disposal rules in the law to dairy farms in Yakima Valley, Wash. The bipartisan-supported bill has been referred to committee. DBMMC will be working to introduce a similar bill in the Senate with the goal of making it into law.
