BACKGROUND:

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was originally enacted in 1994 to address trade barriers between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. U.S. agricultural exports to both countries have expanded since the agreement went into effect, although some restrictions still exist, including Canada’s policies that block access for U.S. dairy producers. This week, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced its objectives for the upcoming NAFTA re-negotiations, which can formally begin on August 16. Stakeholders are optimistic that this process will address current trade discrepancies while preserving the economic gains that NAFTA has provided for American agriculture. DBMMC participates in a broad coalition that has been preparing for the renegotiation of NAFTA. DBMMC also submitted comments to highlight the importance of dairy in NAFTA and met with USTR as part of its Washington, D.C. fly in last month.
