Today is a big day for the voice of milk on Capitol Hill.
Six of our member farmers and several staff members are in Washington D.C. to meet with federal lawmakers and agency leaders about the needs of our farmers.
We are working alongside our D.C.-based consultant Michael Torrey & Associates.
Today, we are holding 21 meetings with lawmakers and their staffs representing our members’ states to explain the challenges our farmers face each day while working hard to create the safe and nutritious milk that feeds so many people in the U.S. and other countries. We’ll also be meeting with representatives of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The key issues we are raising:
A sustainable workforce
Trade and more access to foreign markets
Highly functional federal dairy programs
Protection and promotion of dairy products
Environmental regulation and sustainable innovation
Farm provisions in the federal spending bill
The coming farm bill
Earlier in the week, we met with other key agricultural stakeholder groups, and we sat down with representatives from the Canadian and Mexican embassies as well as the Office of the United States Trade Representative to talk about the importance of access to international markets.
As you know, there is a lot at stake and we need to make sure lawmakers and others understand how crucial these issues are to our farmers.
Your voice — the voice of milk — needs to be heard and we are proud to be ensuring this.
Also, rest assured that beyond today we will continue to work aggressively on your behalf and with your help.
You can follow our activities in Washington on Edge’s Facebook page and other social media channels. The hashtag is #TheVoiceofMilk.
