Passion, determination and no fear of challenges are three characteristics that farmers and veterans share.

They also recently had the opportunity to share ice cream sundaes in honor of National Ice Cream Month.

On July 24, Jeff and Lorraine Trapp of Trapper’s Turn Dairy, who are members of Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, and other dairy farmers from Portage and Waupaca counties served ice cream at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wis

After attending an event that showcased the Peterson Farm Brothers, the Trapps have been inspired to talk more about their story and promote dairy products in their community. For the past few years, they have done this by serving ice cream to the great men and women who live near their farm in Scandinavia, Wis. The event, hosted by the Veterans Home, also included a polka band.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He called for “all people of the United States to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” What more appropriate activity could there be than serving ice cream to veterans who served our great country?

We made ice cream sundaes complete with whipped cream and cherries. The musicians and staff got a taste of the sundaes, too. Who can turn down ice cream, especially on a hot summer day?

The Trapps and the other dairy farmers enjoyed this opportunity to promote dairy products and show appreciation for American heroes who overcame numerous challenges while serving our country.

We were grateful that the most difficult challenge that day was scooping the frozen ice cream from the pail!
