Edge continues to make the dairy community’s case for changes in the way the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates mislabeling of plant-based dairy imitations.  Aaron Stauffacher, Edge’s associate director of government affairs, this month submitted comments to the FDA as the agency develops a far-reaching Nutrition Innovation Strategy. While most customers who buy these imitation products might understand they are not consuming real milk, cheese or ice cream, the public is still being misled that those foods are nutritionally similar to legitimate dairy products, he said.

Stauffacher also stressed the need for flexibility within certain standards of identity to allow for the development of new dairy food and beverage products that can compete in the marketplace and help customers meet their nutritional needs.

Stauffacher previously testified regarding the Nutrition Innovation Strategy at a public hearing on July 26. He was one of just a handful of dairy farmer voices at that hearing. You can read a copy of his prepared testimony here and listen to his comments here. Again, his focus was on the co-op’s labeling concerns.
