by Travis Senn, senior communications specialist By
taking a few simple steps, you can ensure your farm is safe from malicious
attacks from animal activists, says Casey Kinler of Animal Ag Alliance on the
latest episode of Dairy Stream.
The
Animal Ag Alliance is a non-profit organization that safeguards the future of
animal agriculture and its value to society by bridging the communication gap
between the farm and food communities.
“Activists
have shown that they are willing to exaggerate, fabricate or take things out of
context,” Kinler said. “We as the dairy community cannot give them any more
ammunition to use.”
Among
basic things a farm can start with, Kinler suggests farms putting up “No
Trespassing” signs, locking gates and doors and installing a fence around your
property. Those looking for more advanced investments should consider
motion-activated floodlights, alarms or cameras that can notify you directly on
your phone.
In
addition to on-farm threats, Kinler urges farmers to protect themselves from
any cyber-attacks as activists become more sophisticated in their tactics.
Controlling access to computers and/or sensitive information can be an
important first step to limiting a farm’s exposure.
