Letter from Leadership - Get involved in local government

Edge prides itself on serving its members as the voice of milk on policy and regulatory matters — in D.C. and beyond. However, as hard as we work to represent our members on a national level, some work must be done within our local communities. Now more than ever before, we are finding out just how critical having a seat at the local table can prove.

There has been a string of local movements in rural Wisconsin in recent years that is troubling to say the least. These regulations are impractical, unfair and, in some cases, we feel, illegal. And while not as pronounced elsewhere in Edge states, the threat of cookie-cutter regulations spreading further is real.

These local governments, often comprised of as few as three people, can turn things upside down if not held accountable.

As strong as our presence is, we do not have the resources to monitor every county or township across our membership. To do so would demand more staff and financial resources than we can muster. However, you can help us make a difference in our communities.

I would like to issue a challenge to you — become more involved in your local government. Attend town board meetings. Run for office. While we cannot always be there ourselves, we have resources available to you. You don’t have to do it alone. Want to learn more? Reach out to us today.

Agriculture’s presence is strong, especially in our rural communities. Farm dollars drive their economies. Help us ensure that your voice — the voice of milk — remains heard on every level, from Capitol Hill to the town hall.
